More than a decade before Adam West donned his black suit with pointed ears and appeared on television as Batman, my father was born. My dad spent those years as a young man whom everyone addressed as Bruce. If you inquired more intently with my grandmother, you’d come to find out that my dad’s legit birth name is Bruce Wayne.
He was able to escape public attention for the early years of his life, unlike myself, bearing the name Adrian – shared with the wife of Philadelphia’s infamous Rocky. I took my fair share of ‘Yo Adrian’ ridicule while ordering hoagies and Starbucks over the years.
The old man would find joy in lining us up on the living room floor in our sleeping bags to watch a Batman marathon on TV Land or whichever local network was still finding viewer loyalty with his ability to take down sinister foes like The Joker…
…and Penguin.
The Batman has come a long way and taken many forms in my lifetime – starting with those childhood memories of the 1960’s TV show and reappearing with Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale (my personal favorite) and most recently with Ben Affleck…
However, my favorite reincarnation of the superhero comes in the form of one of my favorite toys – LEGO. And if it weren’t enough that me and my kids were already collecting the LEGO Batman Movie Series minifigure collection – with the movie debuting this Friday, February 10th they’ve released an app that has kept my kids busy for the last few days.
Run like Batman, drive like Batman, DJ like Batman. You can run, jump and grapple across The Bat Cave, street and rooftops of Gotham and Arkham Asylum. You can play as Batman or Batgirl, unlock Robin, Kimono Batman, Scuba Batman (my fave), Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Bruce Wayne in a tux, Glam Bat and even The Bat Pack.
Customize your own Batmobile – unlock vehicles from the movie like the Joker’s notorious Lowrider and Bane’s Toxic Truck! Use the Batwing to fly to new environments – most importantly, battle villain bosses like The Joker, Penguin and POISON IVY! And don’t forget about DJ’ing your way to stardom, featuring music from the film.
Aside from mini games like Alfred’s Bat-Snaps, Fruit Bat Smoothie, Lobster Thermidor Cook-Off, Dolphin Rider and Joker’s Escape (my kids favorite, they get to pop balloons to thwart his escape), my favorite part of the app is the Super SigFig Creator. This part of the app allows you to customize your own superhero, print them up as trading cards, complete with stats and mini-bio on the back – based on the parts you used to create them.
You can also purchase tickets, check showtimes, watch videos and access the toy viewer – which includes all of the LEGO sets themed around the movie!
Do it all in the LEGO Batman Movie Game App, now available for free on the App Store and Google Play! Download now.
