This year has been a BIG one for our family. We picked up and relocated (again) from coastal Virginia to Nashville, Tennessee. And after almost 9 years of staying at home with the kids, I decided to chase an opportunity executive producing a nationally and internationally syndicated morning drive-time radio show.

Everything in our lives has been pretty much turned on its head. I felt as if we hadn’t even finished unpacking before we loaded up again. While it’s been a tough transition for me and my wife, the kids have also dealt with their fair share of change.

However, there are two things that have remained constant this October. One of them is 4-H National Youth Science Day, sponsored by HughesNet. The other is my daughter Ava’s love for science. Even with the interstate move and a handful of health issues, she managed to score an ‘A’ on her report card.

Some of you may remember that I partnered with HughesNet, the #1 satellite Internet provider in the country, last year to support their work with 4-H on a National Youth Science Day challenge that focused on coding and computer science.

What about this year?

This year, 4-H launched an NYSD challenge called Game Changers. It teaches kids ages 8-14 how to use computer science to create games, solve problems and engage with topics they’re passionate about. HughesNet sponsors National Youth Science Day because they’re passionate about providing access to STEM education to empower the next generation of leaders. This is why they’ve sent me 20 kits to give away!

This year’s Game Changers challenge uses physical activity and puzzles to teach kids important CS concepts and problem-solving skills, creating real-world connections between computer science and civic engagement, healthy living and agriculture. Although the challenge includes one computer-based and two unplugged activities to help kids learn CS, all can be completed without internet access.

Ava (10) wasn’t the only ‘A’ in science in our household. Charlie (8) brought home the same grade and love for the subject, so I’m excited to work on this with them!
