SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:
Exelixis is building a world-class team to accelerate the discovery and development of novel medicines to fight cancer and we are seeking a highly experienced computational drug discovery scientist. You will harness insights from biomolecular structure, computation, and informatics and partner with medicinal chemists, biologists, structural scientists, bioinformaticians, and drug metabolism/PK experts to invent the medicines that oncology patients are waiting for.
The ideal candidate will have significant industry experience using ligand- and structure-based drug design methods and will have a proven track record of inventive contributions to small molecule projects at all stages of drug discovery. Of particular importance is the ability to build strong collaborations with partner scientists across sites to promote a predict-first culture while advancing the drug discovery portfolio. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential, as you will interact closely with interdisciplinary small molecule discovery project teams in a fast-moving and multi-geography environment. The successful candidate will also be expected to help build our computational chemistry and informatics capabilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Help define a robust strategy to integrate advanced computational chemistry and ligand- and structure-based drug design methods into small molecule drug discovery programs
Develop and integrate computational and informatics tools or workflows into our ecosystem
Leverage state-of-the-art computational tools and workflows to provide non-obvious insights and invent new molecules and drive hit identification, hit and lead optimization, and development candidate selection
Provide day-to-day scientific leadership, mentorship, and influence across boundaries
Foster the growth of a high-performing computational chemistry and informatics team
Deliver scientific presentations to project teams, internal/external collaborators, and senior management
Continue to engage in the scientific community through conference presentations, publications, technical documents, and patent applications
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Initially no supervisory responsibility
As the organization grows, build and manage a small group of computational scientists
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Education/Experience:
Ph.D. in chemistry, biophysics, physics, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of post-PhD industry experience; or,
M.Sc. in chemistry, biophysics, physics, or a related field and a minimum of 9 years of post-degree industry experience; or,
B.Sc in chemistry, biophysics, physics, or a related field and a minimum of 11 years of post-degree industry experience; or,
Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience/The Ideal for Successful Entry into Job:
Clear track record of applying computational technologies and structure-based drug design to advance the discovery of small molecule therapeutics.
Knowledge/Skills:
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Demonstrated, inventive drug discovery impact from the application of ligand- and structure-based methods such as conformational searching, pharmacophores/structure superposition, docking, protein structure prediction, molecular dynamics, free energy perturbation, quantum mechanics, etc.
Experience with informatics and data analysis/visualization packages
Solid understanding of medicinal chemistry and in vitro and in vivo ADMET principles
Experience with multiple drug target classes
Demonstrated, independent thought and creativity in science as evidenced by patents, publications, and invited presentations
Strong written, oral, and presentation communication skills
Ability to work effectively in geographically dispersed teams
PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Examples of the successful application of physical chemical property calculations and/or machine learning to optimize the non-potency (ADMET) attributes of molecules are strongly preferred
Experience in library design, diversity analysis, and approaches to improve virtual screening, fragment, DEL, and cell-based HTS is strongly preferred
Experience with different pharmacology mechanisms and/or modalities, e.g. orthosteric and allosteric binders, fragment-based screening and optimization, covalent binders, protein degraders and/or molecular glues, and protein-protein interactions is strongly preferred
Experience collaborating with CRO partners
Programming experience (e.g. Python)
Experience with commercially available computational packages such as offerings from Chemical Computing Group, Gaussian, OpenEye, Schrodinger, etc.
Experience with commercially available informatics and data visualization tools such as Knime, Pipeline Pilot, Spotfire, Vortex, etc.
