Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Special Education Coordinator for Ft. Lewis Elementary for the 2024-25 school year.
Responsibilities of the Special Education Coordinator:
Special Education Coordinators facilitate the Special Education process at the building level. This position provides a monetary supplement and requires year round duties, to include summer months when deems necessary. In general, communication to and from Central Office will be routed through the building level Special Education Coordinator. Coordinators are required to attend monthly meetings at Central Office in order to better facilitate this communication. Special Education Coordinators are expected to comply with all policies and philosophies of the Roanoke County Public Schools.
There is an additional stipend for the Coordinator position.
Teacher/Building Level Support:
- Serve as liaison between schools and Central Office
- Attend scheduled meetings at Central Office
- Hold monthly department meetings to disperse information
- Assign case managers to all students in special education
- Assist with ordering necessary materials for department (protocols, procedural safeguards, CANS, classroom items, etc.)
- Mentor Special Education teachers in their departments
- Review Individualized Education plans (IEP) for the purpose of content and required data
- Attend IEP meetings, including Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Manifestation meetings, as needed
Management Support:
- Maintain Tracking Log for eligibility timelines
- Facilitate coverage for a variety of meetings
- Supervision of IA coverage/responsibilities
- Coordination for SOL test accommodations with STC's
- Maintain accurate student information in Synergy
- Prepare paperwork, manage present FAPT and CPMT cases
- Communicate with Special Education Supervisor regarding building concerns, special situations, and, when needed, their attendance at IEP meetings.
- Coordinate building level records disposal with Guidance Department
- End of year checklist-File Management to ensure special education team members have their files in order/organized according to Order of Confidential Records
Program Support:
- Assist with organization and Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) collection; review portfolios before submitted
- Consult and collaborate with outside agencies,Roanoke County's alternative schools, and private day schools on behalf of students in special education
- Assist with articulation for transitioning students between home school and feeder school (elementary =5 th grade teacher assists in articulation; secondary=special education coordinator assists in transition plans)
- Assist in arranging or providing training and/or in-service for special education department, Instructional Assistants (IAs) and building staff
Requirements
Applicant must hold a current Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement. Three (3) years of teaching experience in a special education setting is preferred.
Physical Requirements
