Working under the direction of the CCARTA Associate Director for Training and Research and Senior Health Educator, to support training activities, curriculum design, development, and dissemination of evidence-based practices for criminal offender treatment to front-line correctional and clinical professionals within the Department of Psychiatry. Training activities includes providing resistant training attendees in groups average 45 people and the incumbent will need to know how to tactfully redirecting disruptive behavior. Some of the training activities topics are cross-trainings, Medication Assisted Therapy Substance Use Disorders & Treatment 101-105, Therapeutic Community Immersion, Working with Motivation to Facilitate Behavior Change, Stages of Group Development, Cognitive and Behavioral Group Counseling Skills Training, Alcohol Abuse and Addiction, Dual Diagnosis, Anger Management, Hepatitis C, HIV and Sexuality Transmitted Infections, Case Management, Substance Use and Abuse Among Older Adults, Overview of the Treatment Process in the Criminal Justice System, Introduction to the Process of Addiction, Team Building, and Problem Identification and Solving.
Other responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, conducting research and working on special projects on CCARTA substance abuse and find ways to spread awareness in community settings, attend weekly research team meetings to discuss training and implementation of training protocol, implement appropriate teacher training, arrange and deliver training in multiple formats (e.g. in-person, as part of a team, in electronic format) on addictions and related health and safety concerns, participate in the development of CCARTA presentation materials and videos. Assist with updating training materials as directed and other project and miscellaneous tasks as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSFour years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Public Health, social sciences, or related area.
Must have a valid California Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
Must be eligible for clearance to visit and work inside the prisons and other CDCR facilities.
Basic knowledge of the health promotion and education field.
Skills associated with the delivery of health promotion and education programs.
Effective interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Effective organizational skills.
Training and experience using motivational interviewing techniques with incarcerated populations. Knowledge of various psychological theories and appropriate techniques for working with incarcerated populations.
Demonstrated ability to use computer information systems and solid computer literacy skills. Knowledge and experience in utilizing computer word processing to update and develop training material.
Demonstrated accountability and excellent organizational skills to prioritize workload to promptly meet deadlines. Work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, to follow through with superior attention to detail and to complete tasks in a timely manner by a specific deadline.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a good working relationship with a wide variety of people, using tact, diplomacy, confidentiality and flexibility. Demonstrated ability to use professional judgment to interpret, clarify and problem solve in a stressful working environment.
Knowledge of prison culture, dynamics and environmental risk factors.
Excellent writing skills to assist with grant writing, publications, etc.
Must have skills as a public speaker. Must be able to stay tactful and be able to work with adversarial populations.
Must be comfortable with inmate population.
Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
Must be able to travel between UCSD, prisons and other facilities throughout the State is required which will require overnight stay. Travel time typically between Monday-Thursday.
Must be willing to cover other locations throughout the State of California to fulfill the CCARTA program needs.
Must be eligible for prison clearance to visit and work inside the prisons.
Must be willing to work in a minimum thru maximum security state prison as required.
Must be able to be flexible and work weekends, evenings, and overtime as needed.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 - $42.10
